And I got nothing for you darling but a story to tell… about the rain on the pavement and the sound as it fell.

I have a thing for quotes. I’ve always had a thing for striking words, and maybe that’s the writer in me. My greatest dream is to write something, someday, that someone will look at and feel a connection to. That they can look back on and think: that is exactly how I feel. And so, I thought I would share a collection of quotes I’ve collected over the years–some found in books (manly Sarah Dessen’s, as she is now and always be the kind of writer I aspire to be), some found randomly on the internet–that have struck something in me. Some of them are silly, some of them are self explanatory, but all of them mean something to me. .

“I wrote the story myself. It’s about a girl who lost her reputation and never missed it.”

“You can’t just plan a moment when things get back on track, just as you can’t plan the moment you lose your way in the first place.”

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”

“A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave. A soul mate’s purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, and make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life.”

“To be happy, it first takes being comfortable being in your own shoes. The rest can work up from there. The hardest situation to stay happy, I think, is when you’re trying to find love, and yourself at the same time. It just doesn’t seem to fit well. So I believe that happiness is being able to wake up and just know that this is what you wanted, and not what somebody else wanted.”

“It’s never too late to be who you might have been.” ~George Eliot

“You know that feeling? That feeling when you just want the right thing to fall into the right place, not only because it’s right, but because it will mean that such a thing is still possible? I want to believe that.”

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

“The heart was made to be broken.” –Oscar Wilde

“Finding someone isn’t about trying to transform yourself into the perfect image of what you think they want. It’s about being exactly who you are and then finding a person who appreciates that.”

“Life is an awful, ugly place to not have a best friend.”

“We lose the people we love because we are meant to love someone else. We lose them because we are destined to find somebody else. It is a simple fact that is sometimes hard to accept because we are too stubborn to let go of something that doesn’t belong to us anymore.”

“There are things that we never want to let go of, people we never want to leave behind. But keep in mind that letting go isn’t the end of the world, it’s the beginning of a new life.”

“If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” ~Katharine Hepburn

“If you love someone, tell him or her. Forget about the rules or the fear of looking ridiculous. What is truly ridiculous is passing up on an opportunity to tell someone that your heart is invested in him or her.”

“Truth is, everybody’s going to hurt you. You just gotta find the ones who are worth suffering for.”

“It’s better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you’re not.”

“I am good, but not an angel. I do sin, but I am not the devil. I am just a small girl in a big world trying to find someone to love.”

“You don’t choose who you love, nor do you choose the attraction. You choose to either take action or not.”

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

“It’s just that…I just think that some things are meant to be broken. Imperfect. Chaotic. It’s the universe’s way of providing contrast, you know? There have to be a few holes in the road. It’s how life is.”

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” ~Marilyn Monroe

“Life is about change. Sometimes it’s painful, sometimes it’s beautiful, but most of the time it’s both.”

“You cannot find peace by avoiding life.”

“What is family? They were the people who claimed you. In good, in bad, in parts or in whole, they were the ones who showed up, who stayed in there, regardless. It wasn’t just about blood relations or shared chromosomes, but something wider, bigger. We had many families over time. Our family of origin, the family we created, and the groups you moved through while all of this was happening: friends, lovers, sometimes even strangers. None of them perfect, and we couldn’t expect them to be. You can’t make any one person your world. The trick was to take what each could give you and build your world from it.”

VERONICA: “Come on. Ruined lives? Bloodshed? You really think a relationship should be that hard?”
LOGAN: “No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.”

“Some things don’t last forever, but some things do. Like a good song, or a good book, or a good memory you can take out and unfold in your darkest times, pressing down on the corners and peering in close, hoping you still recognize the person you see there.”

“When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I’m already better than them.”

“Death ends a life, not a relationship.”
